  • Place the new film behind the Game Boy screen. The polarizing film will appear darker or lighter when rotated 90°. We will need to choose the right orientation for our backlight mod. If the Game Boy will be using a bivert chip, the polarizing screen needs to be tilted 90° until it appears dark.

This Kit includes a custom Front PCB WITH ribbon cable and brand new 3 inch backlit LCD screen. You will need to solder on your old speaker. Computer cleaner mac. The PCB interconnect ribbon comes pre soldered when purchased here, other distributors may provide this loose and you'll need to solder yourself.

You will need to enlarge the viewing window in the DMG front shell, and provide your own LCD protector (JellyBelly customs sell these). Some shell modification will be required. Soldering required for your existing speaker and 2 backlight wires.

While not a drop in replacement, this new screen does offer a superior backlight, amazing contrast and comparable refresh rate with the original. Due to the STN construction of the LCD there are some contrast artifacts on heavy grey images but these don't normally occur during gameplay. This can be seen in the image with the BennVenn SD logo - and is the absolute worst case example.

This LCD does have blur/refresh latency similar to the original and isn't ideally suited for fast moving high graphics games like DKC. It is best suited to static or slow moving/RPG games. LSDJ, Pokemon, Tetris etc.

Before you begin, assure you have a genuine ASM Density Backlight. Refer to the hologram on the back of the backlight panel and reference the photo above for authenticity. Many of the Density imitations on the market are notorious for overheating the Game Boy's power regulator, causing the case's plastic to melt.

Introduction:

The LCD is comprised of four main layers shown in 'Figure 1'.

Our goal is to remove the bottom polarized film (which will be replaced with our own piece) and the reflective foil. DO NOT remove the top layer of polarized film. If you mistakenly remove it, you will not be able to see any data on your LCD screen.

The reflective foil is nontransparent, therefore it needs to be removed for the backlight to be visible. We remove the polarized film as well, because if we do not, there will be a considerable amount of glue residue left on it that is extremely difficult to remove. Furthermore, by using our own piece of polarized film we can 'invert' or 'bivert' the LCD.

Before we begin, we recommend wearing rubber gloves to prevent getting fingerprints on the LCD. We also put a piece of plastic over the front of the LCD to prevent scratches, but this is optional.
